The Wizard of Oz has become one of the best-known films of all time. It was released in 1939 and was originally a box office failure despite winning two Academy Awards and being nominated for best picture. Telecasts started in 1956 where it then became an annual event making it the most-watched motion picture in history, named by the Library of Congress.
