Custom triple matted, museum quality framed display measures 18" x 24" in size and features a check dated July 24, 1875. The check has been hand-signed in black ink pen by Samuel Clemens more commonly known by his pen name, Mark Twain (D. 1910). The display also features an FDC cachet envelope dated October 13, 1972.

This is an extremely rare and valuable check due to the date it was written. One month earlier, the first volume of Tom Sawyer was published in London, England and exactly five days after, on July 29th, 1875 a pirated version was printed in Canada. This copy continued to sell out and reached it's third edition before the first American copy was published. Samuel Clemens was extremely angry, not only in the delay of American publication, but the loss of income the pirated copy caused him.

Called "the father of American literature", Mark Twain was an American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer most well known for writing "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" and "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn".

The lot / autograph(s) includes a James Spence Authentication (JSA) Auction House LOA for authenticity purposes.
