Aurelian can be credited with steering the Roman Empire away from the path of destruction and disintegration that it had been heading down for the last 35 years. On some of his coins he is quite rightly hailed as Restitutor Orbis or 'Restorer of the World'. During his short reign, he recovered territory lost to the separatist Palmyrenian and Gallic Empires, defeated the German tribes, protected the City of Rome with a new wall and reformed the coinage.
