Up for auction is a stunning Beckett encapsulated double signature of William Cody with the date 1888. (W.F. Cody, Buffalo Bill, 1888. The encapsulation is set in a 23”x23” triple matted museum glass and frame in a one of a kind composite. Accompanying it are a colorized half dollar, a 4x6 postcard of a poster for an 1890 Wild West Show from the same period as the signature, an FDC with two affixed stamps, an 8x10 photograph of a youthful W.F. Cody, and an informative plaque with biographical data and the quote “Don’t ever say you are sorry for “being caught in the moment” because at that moment you were EXACTLY where you wanted to be.”

William Frederick Cody (February 26, 1846-January 10, 1917) was an American scout, bison hunter, and showman extraordinaire. Bill started working for his father at eleven, entered the Union Army at seventeen in 1863 and served until the war’s end in 1865. He contracted with the Kansas Pacific Railway to supply bison meat to the workers soon after. He is purported to have shot 4,282 Buffalo in an eighteen month span. He even entered an eight hour contest with William Comstock for the privilege of the name Buffalo in front of Bill. He shot 68 to Comstock’s 48 and the legend was born.

He became a civilian scout for the army in 1872 and was awarded the Medal of Honor for conspicuous bravery. In 1883 he founded the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show. Appearing in his show at various times were such famous individuals as Sitting Bull, Wild Bill Hickok, Annie Oakley, Calamity Jane and Pawnee Bill. Cody traveled throughout the US and overseas, performing for the heads of state as well as the general populace. He earned international acclaim and performed right up to his death in 1917.
