Maximian was a partner in the Tetrarchic system of government, where the empire was ruled by two senior emperors, one in the east and one in the west, each with a junior to assist them. Under this system he lost the provinces of Britain and Gaul to a rebel naval commander called Carausius and his successor Allectus. The territory was later recovered by Constantius Chlorus. As the Tetrarchic system broke down, and civil war broke out, Maximian would appear to have changed sides on several occasions, finally he was captured and ordered to commit suicide by Constantine the Great
