In 1525, Ferdinand I of Austria inherited the Hungarian throne. Although the coins minted by Ferdinand in Hungary were gradually changed to match those of Austria, Ferdinand knew that certain symbols, in particular those showing the Hungarian arms and especially the Madonna with child (the patron of Hungary) could not be removed from the coins without a rebellion by the people of Hungary.

Obverse: “Madonna & Child” in center with mint mark: K B.

Legend: VNGARIE PATRONA

Reverse: Hungarian coat of arms in center, with legend, name and titles of the King, and date of minting.

This coin was minted at the Kremnitz Mint, the oldest working mint in the world today.
