Document measures approximately 12" x 15.5" in size and is hand-signed in the upper left corner by King George II (D. 1760). The document details the promotion of Roger Townshend Esquire to Captain of the First Regiment of the Foot Guard on February 8, 1740.

George Augustus II ruled as the king of Great Britain from 1727 to 1760. While generally looked upon by historians as not being a very personable king, he is considered to have held great influence in military affairs being the last British monarch ever to lead troops into battle during the Battle of Dettingen in 1743. Having ruled over the North American colonies, George II is remembered as creating the colony known today as the American state of Georgia. George II would be succeeded by his grandson George III who would become America's last ruling king before earning its independence.
