1989 Fleer Update is a 132-card Traded Set released in November, 1989. The cards were distributed exclusively in factory set form in grey and white, cellophane wrapped boxes through Hobby dealers.

The cards are identical in design to regular issue 1989 Fleer cards except for the U-prefixed numbering on back. The set numbering is in team order with players within teams ordered alphabetically.

The set includes special cards for Nolan Ryan's 5000th strikeout and Mike Schmidt's retirement.

Rookie Cards include Steve Finley, Jim Abbott, Kevin Appier, Joey (Albert) Belle, Deion Sanders, Omar Vizquel and an updated rookie-year card (he had been traded during the season) of Randy Johnson.
