The 1856 Liberty Gold Quarter Eagle and the $2.50 Indian Head Gold Quarter Eagle are two historic U.S. coins that reflect different eras of American coinage. The Liberty Quarter Eagle, struck from 1840 to 1907, features Christian Gobrecht’s classic design with Lady Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed “LIBERTY,” surrounded by 13 stars, and a heraldic eagle on the reverse. Composed of 90% gold, the 1856 issue is a collectible piece representing pre-Civil War America, prized for both its artistry and rarity in higher grades.
In contrast, the $2.50 Indian Head Quarter Eagle, minted from 1908 to 1929, broke tradition with Bela Lyon Pratt’s incuse design, where the images are sunken into the surface rather than raised. Depicting a Native American chief in full headdress and an eagle on the reverse, it stands out as one of the most unique designs in U.S. coinage. Both coins remain highly sought after by collectors today.
