Captain David McCampbell (1910–1996) was the highest-scoring U.S. Navy fighter ace of World War II, credited with an astonishing 34 aerial victories. A fearless and highly skilled aviator, he commanded Air Group 15, also known as the ""Fabled Fifteen,"" during the Pacific campaign, leading his pilots to unprecedented success against the Imperial Japanese Navy.

McCampbell’s heroism and exceptional combat skills were best demonstrated on October 24, 1944, during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. In a single sortie, he single-handedly downed nine enemy aircraft, setting a record for the most kills in one mission by an American pilot. Earlier in the war, he had already earned distinction by achieving seven aerial victories in a single engagement on June 19, 1944, during the Battle of the Philippine Sea, an event known as the ""Great Marianas Turkey Shoot.""

For his unparalleled service and extraordinary bravery in combat, McCampbell was awarded the Medal of Honor, the Navy Cross, the Silver Star, and the Distinguished Flying Cross, among many other honors.
