Photo measures 5" x 7" in size and has been hand-signed and inscribed in blue felt-tip pen by (5) members of the "Straight Flush" crew including Ira Weatherly, Francis D. Thornhill, Eugene S. Grennan, Gillen T. Nicely, and Jack Bivans.
Ira C. Weatherly served as a 2nd lieutenant in the 393rd Bombardment Squadron. He was the pilot on the Straight Flush during the Hiroshima mission.
Francis D. Thornhill served as a captain in the 393rd Bombardment Squadron. He was the navigator on the Straight Flush during the Hiroshima mission.
Eugene S. Grennan served as a 2nd lieutenant in the 509th Composite Group. He was the flight engineer on the Straight Flush during the Hiroshima mission.
Gillen T. Nicely served as a sergeant in the 393rd Bombardment Squadron. He was the tail gunner on the Straight Flush during the Hiroshima mission.
Jack Bivans was the Assistant Flight Engineer on the "Straight Flush" B-29 crew that participated in the first Atomic bombing over Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945.
Bivans was born in Evanston, Illinois, on August 30, 1925. Before enlisting in the Air Corps in 1943, Bivans enjoyed a career as a radio actor, a profession he returned to after the war. As a part of the 509th Composite Group, 393rd Bomber Squadron, Bivans' service started in 1944 in Wendover, Utah, before he was transferred to Tinian Island to prepare for the atomic attack on Japan.
