Chicago Cubs Original Check from 1919 Signed by William Veeck Sr. & Speed Martin (Beckett Encapsulated)

Original Cubs National League Ball Club Check

This original Chicago Cubs check is dated October 6, 1919 and was written to Speed Martin. The check is hand-signed by William Veeck Sr. (D. 1933). The check is also signed on the back by Speed Martin (D. 1983).

William Veeck Sr. was a highly influential baseball executive best known for serving as the president of the Chicago Cubs from 1919 until his passing in 1933. A visionary leader, Veeck played a crucial role in modernizing the franchise, implementing innovative promotional strategies, and improving Wrigley Field. Under his leadership, the Cubs became a perennial contender, winning the National League pennant in 1929. Veeck was also instrumental in expanding the reach of baseball through radio broadcasts, helping to grow the game’s popularity. His forward-thinking approach left a lasting impact on the sport, and his legacy continued through his son, Bill Veeck, who became one of baseball’s most legendary owners and promoters.

Speed Martin was a right-handed pitcher who played in Major League Baseball from 1917 to 1922, primarily with the Chicago Cubs. Despite his nickname, which suggested blazing fastballs, Martin was more known for his control and ability to keep hitters off balance. He played a key role for the Cubs during the early 1920s, serving as both a starter and reliever. Martin’s best season came in 1921 when he posted a career-high in wins and innings pitched. Though his time in the majors was relatively short, he remained a respected pitcher of his era before continuing his career in the minor leagues.

The check has been authenticated and encapsulated by Beckett for authenticity purposes.
