Benito Mussolini and King Victor Emmanuel III played pivotal roles in shaping Italy's 20th-century history. Mussolini, as the founder of Fascism, led Italy into a totalitarian regime marked by aggressive nationalism, suppression of dissent, and militarization. His alliance with Nazi Germany and involvement in World War II brought devastation to Italy. King Victor Emmanuel III, though a constitutional monarch, enabled Mussolini’s rise by appointing him prime minister in 1922 and failing to oppose his dictatorial rule. His inaction ultimately weakened the monarchy, contributing to its downfall and the establishment of the Italian Republic in 1946.
