In 1998, at the age of 77, Glenn made history once again by becoming the oldest person to fly in space aboard Space Shuttle *Discovery*.

Before his groundbreaking career as an astronaut, John Glenn served with distinction in the U.S. military. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in World War II and later transferred to the U.S. Marine Corps. Glenn flew 59 combat missions in the Pacific Theater during WWII and 63 more during the Korean War. He also flew as a test pilot, setting a transcontinental speed record in 1957. For his valor and service, Glenn was awarded numerous military honors, including six Distinguished Flying Crosses and the Air Medal with 18 clusters.
