### **Biography of Roy “Butch” Voris (1919–2005)**
Commander **Roy Marlin “Butch” Voris** was a decorated **U.S. Navy fighter pilot**, **World War II flying ace**, and the **founding commanding officer of the U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron—the Blue Angels**.
During **World War II**, Voris flew the **Grumman F6F Hellcat** with **Fighting Squadron 2 (VF-2)** aboard the USS Hornet, achieving **six confirmed aerial victories** in the Pacific Theater. His skill, leadership, and courage earned him the **Distinguished Flying Cross** and numerous Air Medals.
In **1946**, at the request of Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Chester Nimitz, Voris was tasked with creating a flight demonstration team that would showcase naval aviation excellence and boost morale. His vision and execution led to the creation of the **Blue Angels**, one of the world’s premier flight demonstration teams. He served as the first flight leader and returned again to lead the squadron during the Korean War era.
