About Hershel W. “Woody” Williams
Hershel Woodrow “Woody” Williams (1923–2022) was a United States Marine Corps Corporal and the last surviving Medal of Honor recipient from the Battle of Iwo Jima. Born in Fairmont, West Virginia, Williams enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve in 1943 and was assigned to the 21st Marines, 3rd Marine Division.
On February 23, 1945, during the brutal campaign for Iwo Jima, Williams exhibited extraordinary gallantry in action. Armed with a flamethrower, he single-handedly neutralized multiple Japanese pillboxes and defensive emplacements under withering fire. His fearless actions and complete disregard for personal safety allowed American forces to advance and ultimately secure one of the most strategically vital positions in the Pacific Theater.
Medal of Honor Citation
Rank and Organization: Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, 21st Marines, 3d Marine Division
Place and Date: Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 23 February 1945
Entered Service at: Fairmont, West Virginia
Citation:
“For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty... Cpl. Williams daringly went forward alone to attempt the reduction of devastating machine-gun fire from the unyielding positions. Covered by only four riflemen, he fought desperately for four hours, repeatedly returning to his own lines to prepare demolition charges and obtain serviceable flamethrowers. He returned to enemy territory, frequently exposing himself to hostile fire to destroy enemy positions with the flamethrower and demolitions... His unyielding determination and extraordinary heroism preserved the lives of many of his fellow Marines and contributed significantly to the success of the Iwo Jima campaign.”
