### **Biography of Robert Scott Jr.**
**Robert Lee Scott Jr.** (1908–2006) was a pioneering United States Army Air Forces pilot and best-selling author who rose to fame during World War II as a fighter ace and the author of *God Is My Co-Pilot*, one of the war’s most enduring aviation memoirs.
A 1932 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Scott was already a seasoned pilot when he volunteered for service in the China-Burma-India Theater. In 1942, he became the commanding officer of the **23rd Fighter Group**, which succeeded the famed **American Volunteer Group (AVG), the Flying Tigers**, under General Claire Chennault.
Flying the **Curtiss P-40 Warhawk**, Scott was credited with **13 aerial victories**, earning the status of **fighter ace**. His daring combat missions and leadership were instrumental in providing crucial air support over the treacherous Himalayas—"The Hump"—and in the defense of Allied positions in China.
His memoir, *God Is My Co-Pilot*, published in 1943, became a nationwide bestseller and was adapted into a popular 1945 film. Scott was awarded the **Distinguished Flying Cross**, **Silver Star**, **Legion of Merit**, and **Air Medal**, among others.
Following the war, Scott continued to serve with distinction, including assignments at the Pentagon and as an advisor in Taiwan. He retired from active duty in 1957 but remained an active speaker, historian, and ambassador for the Air Force. He lived well into his 90s, continuing to fly and advocate for veterans and aviators.
