### **Biography of Wally Schirra**

**Wally Schirra** (1923–2007) was a pioneering American naval aviator, test pilot, and one of the original seven astronauts selected for NASA's **Project Mercury** in 1959. He holds the distinct honor of being the **only astronaut to fly in all three of NASA’s original manned spaceflight programs**: **Mercury**, **Gemini**, and **Apollo**.

Schirra first flew aboard **Mercury-Atlas 8 (Sigma 7)** in 1962, orbiting the Earth six times in a mission that emphasized spacecraft precision and pilot-controlled maneuvers. In 1965, he commanded **Gemini 6A**, executing the first successful space rendezvous with Gemini 7, a foundational achievement for future lunar missions. Schirra's final flight was as commander of **Apollo 7** in 1968, the first crewed mission of the Apollo program and a critical test of the Command and Service Module in Earth orbit.

A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and a Korean War combat pilot, Schirra logged over 295 hours in space and was awarded the **NASA Distinguished Service Medal**, **Navy Distinguished Service Medal**, and **Air Medal**, among numerous other honors.

After retiring from NASA and the U.S. Navy as a **Captain**, he remained a prominent public figure and space program advocate, co-anchoring CBS News coverage of later Apollo missions with Walter Cronkite.
