### **Biography of Brigadier General Robin Olds (1922–2007)**

Robin Olds was a legendary United States Air Force fighter pilot and triple combat ace, whose military career spanned **World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War**. Born into a military family—his father was Army Air Corps Major General Robert Olds—Robin quickly followed in his father’s footsteps and graduated from West Point in 1943.

During **World War II**, Olds was assigned to the **479th Fighter Group**, 8th Air Force, flying **P-38 Lightnings** and later **P-51 Mustangs** over Europe. He achieved **12 confirmed aerial victories** during WWII, cementing his status as a fighter ace and a national hero.

He later commanded the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing during the Vietnam War, flying **F-4 Phantom II** jets, where he earned another **four kills**, bringing his total to **16 confirmed victories** across two wars. His famous **"Operation Bolo"** decoy mission in Vietnam was a brilliant tactical maneuver that led to the downing of seven MiG-21s in a single day.

In addition to his combat accomplishments, Olds was known for his bold leadership, charismatic presence, and his distinctive handlebar mustache—a silent protest against Air Force grooming regulations that became a symbol of morale and defiance.

Olds retired in 1973 as a **Brigadier General**, having earned numerous decorations, including the **Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star (4), Distinguished Flying Cross (5), and Air Medal (39)**.
