### **Biography of Group Captain Geoffrey Leonard Cheshire**
**Group Captain Geoffrey Leonard Cheshire, VC, OM, DSO & Two Bars, DFC (1917–1992)** was a legendary British Royal Air Force bomber pilot and one of the most highly decorated servicemen of WWII. His exemplary valor, innovation in aerial operations, and post-war humanitarian work earned him enduring recognition in British and international history.
Cheshire began flying with the **RAF Bomber Command** early in the war and quickly rose through the ranks due to his outstanding skill and leadership. He flew numerous dangerous missions in aircraft such as the **Avro Lancaster**, commanding both No. 76 Squadron and the elite **No. 617 Squadron**—the famed “Dambusters.” He developed new low-level marking techniques to improve bombing accuracy and volunteered for some of the most hazardous operations.
In 1944, at just 27 years old, Cheshire was awarded the **Victoria Cross**, the United Kingdom’s highest military decoration for gallantry, for sustained courage and innovation in operations that pushed the boundaries of what was possible in aerial warfare. His citation highlighted not only the volume of missions flown but his "outstanding resolution and courage."
In 1945, Cheshire was one of the **official British observers of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki**, witnessing firsthand the destructive power of the new weapon.
After the war, he dedicated his life to humanitarian causes, founding the **Leonard Cheshire Disability** charity, which became one of the world’s largest organizations supporting people with disabilities.
