### **Biography of Joseph J. Foss**
**Joseph Jacob Foss** (1915–2003) was one of the most celebrated American fighter aces of World War II and a legendary figure in United States Marine Corps aviation history. Foss became the **top Marine Corps ace of WWII**, credited with **26 confirmed aerial victories** while flying the **F4F Wildcat** with Marine Fighter Squadron VMF-121 during the Guadalcanal Campaign in the Solomon Islands.
His boldness in combat earned him the nickname **“America’s Ace of Aces”**, and he was often compared to Eddie Rickenbacker, the top U.S. ace of World War I. Foss later served as a flight instructor and combat pilot in other theaters of the war before transitioning into civilian life where he continued to serve the public as a **Governor of South Dakota**, **first Commissioner of the American Football League**, and later as **President of the National Rifle Association**.
In recognition of his gallantry and leadership in aerial combat, Foss was awarded the **Medal of Honor**—America’s highest military decoration.

**For extraordinary heroism and conspicuous gallantry in action above and beyond the call of duty as Executive Officer of a Marine Fighting Squadron in the Solomon Islands area. Engaging in almost daily combat with the enemy from 9 October to 19 November 1942, he personally shot down 23 Japanese planes and damaged others so severely that their destruction was extremely probable. On one occasion, he engaged eight hostile fighters, downed two and dispersed the rest. His daring and skill have been an inspiration to his squadron and reflect great credit upon the United States Naval Service.**
