### **Biography of Colonel William A. Campbell**

**Colonel William A. Campbell (1917–2012)** was a trailblazing **combat fighter pilot**, squadron commander, and one of the most distinguished members of the famed **Tuskegee Airmen**, the first African-American military aviators in the history of the United States Armed Forces.

A graduate of the Tuskegee Institute and the U.S. Army Air Corps’ flight training program at Tuskegee Army Air Field, Campbell earned his pilot wings in 1942. He was among the earliest to complete training and deploy to combat as a member of the **99th Fighter Squadron** and later the **332nd Fighter Group**—units that broke racial barriers in the military and flew more than 15,000 sorties in World War II.

Campbell flew **two combat tours**, first over North Africa and Italy, and later escorting Allied bombers deep into Nazi-occupied Europe. He rose to command the 99th Squadron and earned a reputation for exceptional leadership and aerial skill. By war's end, he had flown more than **100 combat missions**.

Following WWII, Campbell remained in the U.S. Air Force, serving with distinction through the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He eventually attained the rank of **Colonel** and retired after a career that spanned over three decades.

In recognition of his role in history, Campbell and his fellow Tuskegee Airmen were collectively awarded the **Congressional Gold Medal** in 2007.
