Robert M. White was the world’s first pilot to fly a winged aircraft into space. While assigned to the X-15 flight test program, Robert White became the first person to fly over four times the speed of sound. As testing continued, he pushed the X-15 to its design limit, becoming the first person to fly faster than six times the speed of sound. On 17 July 1962, he flew the X-15 to an altitude of 314,750 feet. This flight into space earned him astronaut wings, and the distinction of being the first person to fly a winged aircraft into space.
