### **Biography of Gerald Orren Young (1930–1990)**

**Gerald O. Young** was a highly decorated officer in the United States Air Force and one of the few airmen to receive the **Medal of Honor** for heroic actions during the **Vietnam War**. Born on May 19, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois, Young enlisted in the Air Force in 1955 after serving in the U.S. Navy and worked his way through the ranks to become a **Captain and HH-3E Jolly Green Giant helicopter pilot** with the 37th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron.

On **November 9, 1967**, during a mission deep in hostile territory in Laos, Captain Young displayed unmatched bravery and selflessness while attempting to rescue the crew of a downed U.S. aircraft. Despite being severely wounded and his helicopter being shot down, he refused evacuation until all other survivors had been rescued. His actions under fire, dedication to his fellow servicemen, and unwavering courage in the face of overwhelming danger earned him the nation’s highest military award.

Captain Young later retired as a **Lieutenant Colonel** and passed away in 1990. His name is permanently etched into American military history as an exemplar of valor and sacrifice.
