Colonel (ret) Spiro N. “Steve” Pisanos flew 110 combat missions in Spitfires, P-47 Thunderbolts, and P-51 Mustangs during World War II, becoming a double-ace. In February 1942, Steve Pisanos was one of a select group of American and Canadian volunteers who reported to England to join the "Eagle Squadrons" fighting the Battle of Britain against the Luftwaffe. After flying Spitfires and P-51 Mustang on low-level reconnaissance missions for 6 months, his squadron was absorbed by the US Army Air Forces, and the Greek-born Pisanos was naturalized as a US citizen.
