### **Biography of Col. Walker "Bud" Mahurin (1918–2010)**
Colonel **Walker Melville "Bud" Mahurin** was one of America’s most celebrated fighter aces, serving with distinction in both **World War II** and the **Korean War**. Born in Michigan and a Purdue University graduate, Mahurin entered the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1941 and quickly rose to prominence as a fighter pilot.
Assigned to the **56th Fighter Group**—known as **Zemke’s Wolfpack**—Mahurin flew the **P-47 Thunderbolt** in the European Theater. He achieved his first aerial victory in 1943 and quickly built a reputation for skill and fearlessness in air combat. He became the **first U.S. Air Force ace in two separate theaters**, later adding kills while flying **P-51 Mustangs** in the Pacific and **F-86 Sabres** during the Korean War.
By the end of World War II, Mahurin had amassed **20.75 confirmed aerial victories**, including:
- **19.75 kills in the European Theater (56th Fighter Group)**
- **1 confirmed kill in the Pacific Theater**
- **3 additional kills in Korea**
Mahurin was shot down twice—once over France and once during the Korean War—and survived both ordeals. He was held as a POW in Korea for 16 months.
His decorations include:
- **Distinguished Service Cross**
- **Silver Star**
- **Distinguished Flying Cross** (multiple awards)
- **Air Medal**
- **Purple Heart**
Col. Mahurin retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1956, leaving behind a legacy of valor, innovation, and leadership in American air combat history.
