### **About George R. Tweed**

**George Ray Tweed** (1902–1989) was a U.S. Navy radioman first class stationed on **Guam** when the Japanese invaded the island in December 1941. Rather than surrender, Tweed escaped into the jungle and, with the aid of courageous local Chamorro islanders, **remained in hiding for nearly 1,000 days**. His clandestine resistance included relaying intelligence to American forces and eluding constant Japanese searches. His survival became legendary and symbolic of unwavering resolve and bravery.

Following his rescue during the American liberation of Guam in July 1944, Tweed was awarded the **Legion of Merit** and went on to tell his story in the bestselling memoir, *"Robinson Crusoe, USN"*. His account served as the basis for the 1962 film *"No Man Is an Island."*
