### **About Jacqueline Cochran**

**Jacqueline Cochran (1906–1980)** was a trailblazing aviator whose remarkable career helped redefine the role of women in aviation and military service. Born into poverty in Florida, Cochran rose to become an accomplished pilot, businesswoman, and military officer. She earned her pilot’s license in the early 1930s and quickly gained national attention for her record-setting performances.

By the outbreak of World War II, Cochran had already established herself as one of the most skilled pilots in the world. In 1943, at the height of the war, she was appointed Director of the **Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP)** program—a pioneering initiative that trained over 1,000 civilian female pilots to fly military aircraft in non-combat roles, thereby freeing up male pilots for combat duty.

Cochran’s leadership and vision were instrumental in proving women’s capability to serve in military aviation. Under her command, WASP pilots flew over 60 million miles in every type of aircraft in the Army Air Forces arsenal, including fighters, bombers, and transports. Though the WASP program was disbanded in 1944, its legacy and Cochran’s advocacy would pave the way for full military integration of women in the decades to follow.

Post-war, Jacqueline Cochran continued to break records. She became the **first woman to break the sound barrier** in 1953 and went on to set more speed, altitude, and distance records than any pilot in history—male or female. Her achievements earned her numerous awards, including the **Distinguished Service Medal** and the **Harmon Trophy**—which she won 14 times.

### **About the WASP Pilots of WWII**

The **Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP)** were a groundbreaking group of civilian female aviators who answered their country’s call during WWII. Operating from 1942 to 1944, these women ferried aircraft, towed targets for live anti-aircraft gun practice, and performed test flights, among many other critical tasks.

Despite their invaluable contributions, WASPs were not granted military status during the war and did not receive veteran recognition until 1977. Their service and sacrifice remain a powerful symbol of dedication, courage, and the advancement of women in the U.S. Armed Forces.
