**Captain David McCampbell (1910–1996)** was the U.S. Navy's **all-time leading fighter ace** and one of the most decorated naval aviators in American history. As commander of **Air Group 15 (""The Fabled Fifteen"")** aboard the USS Essex, McCampbell flew the **Grumman F6F Hellcat**, achieving an astonishing **34 confirmed aerial victories** in the Pacific Theater during WWII.

He is best known for his heroic actions on **October 24, 1944**, during the **Battle of Leyte Gulf**, where he single-handedly engaged over 20 Japanese aircraft, shooting down **nine enemy planes** in a single mission—**a Navy record that stands to this day**.
