Presented for auction is an exceptional and historically rich 8x10 photograph titled “American Flag” bearing the handwritten signatures of 24 distinguished World War II veterans, each of whom made a lasting contribution to the Allied victory in WWII. This remarkable photo serves as a tribute to their collective service and valor and comes authenticated by PSA/DNA Authentication Services, complete with their Letter of Authenticity.
Signers and Biographies
Theodore “Dutch” Van Kirk – Navigator of the Enola Gay, the B-29 bomber that dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima. He was the last surviving crew member of that historic mission.
George Mendonsa – U.S. Navy sailor identified as the “Kissing Sailor” in Alfred Eisenstaedt’s iconic V-J Day Times Square photograph.
Charles McGee – Famed Tuskegee Airman, McGee flew 409 combat missions across WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. A trailblazer for African American military aviators.
Steve Pisanos – Greek-American P-51 Ace, flew with the RAF Eagle Squadron before transitioning to the USAAF; credited with 10 aerial victories.
Donald Strait – P-47 Thunderbolt Fighter Ace with 13.5 aerial victories. Flew with the 356th Fighter Group in Europe.
Richard E. Cole – Co-pilot to Jimmy Doolittle on Plane #1 of the legendary Doolittle Raid on Tokyo, April 18, 1942.
C.E. “Bud” Anderson – Triple P-51 Ace of the 357th Fighter Group, 16.25 aerial victories, widely regarded as one of the greatest pilots of WWII.
R.V. Burgin – U.S. Marine and veteran of the Pacific campaign; his story is chronicled in HBO’s The Pacific.
Dean Caswell – Marine Corsair Ace with 7 aerial victories in the Pacific Theater, also served in Korea and Vietnam.
Hershel W. Williams – Medal of Honor Recipient, USMC flamethrower operator awarded for conspicuous gallantry on Iwo Jima.
Arthur Fiedler – European Theatre P-51 Ace, flew with distinction and contributed to air superiority efforts across the continent.
Richard Fleischer – American P-47 Ace with 6 aerial victories.
Abner Aust Jr – Last recognized American Ace of WWII with 5 aerial victories. Later served in Korea and Vietnam.
Charles Baisden – Flying Tigers armorer, served with the AVG, arming legendary P-40 Warhawks used against the Japanese.
Fred Zimmerli – Project Alberta Veteran, worked on the instrumentation and assembly of atomic bomb components at Tinian Island.
Warren Schmidt – Malmedy Massacre Survivor, U.S. Army infantryman who endured the infamous German war crime during the Battle of the Bulge.
Bernard Nolan – B-17 pilot during the Normandy Invasion and Market Garden; flew glider-towing and supply missions.
Bernice Haydu – WASP Pilot, one of the first female military aviators, flew trainer and ferry aircraft during WWII.
Bob Bearden – D-Day paratrooper, 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment; captured and became a POW in Germany.
Don Jakeway – 82nd Airborne paratrooper, jumped into Normandy and Holland, veteran of the Battle of the Bulge.
Milton Mapou – Pearl Harbor Survivor, present on December 7, 1941, when the Japanese attacked the U.S. Pacific Fleet.
Anna Mankiewicz – WASP Pilot, ferried aircraft and trained male pilots during the war effort.
Nell Bright – One of the last surviving WASP Pilots, flew BT-13s, supported aircraft maintenance and logistics.
Hank Kasprzak – U.S. Navy Seabee, part of vital construction and engineering missions in the Pacific Theater.
