About Harold Agnew

Harold Melvin Agnew (1921–2013) was a pioneering American nuclear physicist whose work played a pivotal role in the successful deployment of the first atomic weapons during World War II. A graduate student under Nobel Laureate Enrico Fermi at the University of Chicago, Agnew became deeply involved with the Manhattan Project, assisting in the development and refinement of nuclear weapons. As part of Project Alberta, Agnew was onboard the B-29 ""The Great Artiste"" during the Hiroshima mission on August 6, 1945, where he served as a scientific observer tasked with gathering vital data on the atomic blast.

Following the war, Agnew went on to direct the Los Alamos National Laboratory, further cementing his legacy in nuclear science and national security. His contributions to atomic research and Cold War deterrence policy remain highly respected within the scientific and defense communities.
