**General Joe Henry Engle** (b. 1932) is one of the most accomplished pilots in aerospace history. A graduate of the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School, Engle flew the **X-15 rocket plane**, becoming the **youngest pilot to qualify as an astronaut** before even joining NASA. He later served as **Commander of the Approach and Landing Tests of the Space Shuttle Enterprise** and **Commander of STS-2**, the second orbital flight of the **Space Shuttle Columbia** in 1981.
