### **About the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP):**

Formed in **1942**, the **Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP)** was a pioneering organization of civilian women pilots who were employed to fly military aircraft under the direction of the United States Army Air Forces. These courageous women flew over **60 million miles**, ferrying planes, towing targets for live anti-aircraft training, and testing aircraft — all while facing societal skepticism and without military benefits.

In 1977, thanks to the persistent advocacy of WASP alumni, Congress finally granted the WASPs **military veteran status**, and in 2009, they were collectively awarded the **Congressional Gold Medal**, one of the highest civilian honors in the United States.
