### **About Colonel Hubert Zemke (1914–1994)**

**Colonel Hubert ""Hub"" Zemke** was a legendary **U.S. Army Air Forces** fighter pilot and group commander during World War II, most famously associated with the **56th Fighter Group**, which earned the nickname **“Zemke’s Wolfpack”**. A master of tactical innovation, Zemke led his unit to become the **highest-scoring fighter group in the U.S. Eighth Air Force**, with over **665 enemy aircraft destroyed in aerial combat**.

Initially flying the **P-47 Thunderbolt**, Zemke was known for his leadership style that combined rigorous training, strategic thinking, and an unshakable commitment to the safety and performance of his men. He refined fighter escort techniques for bomber protection and was instrumental in the success of long-range missions deep into Nazi-occupied Europe.

In October 1944, Zemke was forced to bail out of his damaged P-47 over Germany and spent the final months of the war as a prisoner of war. Even in captivity, he distinguished himself by organizing and leading American POWs with honor and discipline until liberation.

Among his numerous decorations are the **Distinguished Service Cross**, **Silver Star**, **Legion of Merit**, and **Distinguished Flying Cross**.
