### **About Colonel Francis “Gabby” Gabreski (1919–2002)**

**Colonel Francis S. “Gabby” Gabreski** was among the most decorated American fighter pilots in history, achieving **34½ confirmed aerial victories**, including **28 kills in World War II** flying the **P-47 Thunderbolt** with the **56th Fighter Group**, and **6½ MiG kills in Korea** flying the **F-86 Sabre**.

A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Gabreski joined the **U.S. Army Air Forces** prior to America’s entry into WWII and was initially assigned to liaise with the British Royal Air Force. He quickly distinguished himself as a fearless and skilled pilot, becoming the **top American ace in the European Theater**. He later commanded the **56th Fighter Group**, also known as **Zemke’s Wolfpack**, and became a legend for both his combat record and leadership.

Gabreski’s military career spanned three wars—**WWII, Korea, and Vietnam**—and he retired as a **Colonel** in the **U.S. Air Force**, having earned honors including the **Distinguished Service Cross**, **Silver Star**, **Distinguished Flying Cross**, **Air Medal**, and **Legion of Merit**.
