**Brigadier General Donald Sewell Lopez** was a highly decorated **United States Army Air Forces fighter pilot**, celebrated for his service as a **P-40 Warhawk and P-51 Mustang pilot with the 23rd Fighter Group in the China-Burma-India Theater** during World War II. A member of the famed **Flying Tigers' successor unit**, Lopez flew **101 combat missions** and was credited with **five confirmed aerial victories**, earning him the distinction of **Fighter Ace**.

After the war, Lopez continued his aviation legacy as a **test pilot**, and later as a **distinguished aerospace engineer** and **Deputy Director of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum**, where he played a key role in developing the museum’s world-renowned exhibits. His expertise in aviation history and technology left a lasting impact on public education in aerospace sciences.
