### **About WWII Ace James Swett (1920–2009)**

**First Lieutenant James E. Swett** served as a fighter pilot with **Marine Fighting Squadron 221 (VMF-221)** during World War II and is among the most revered aces of the Pacific Theater. Swett was awarded the **Medal of Honor** for his extraordinary heroism on **April 7, 1943**, during the **Battle of Tulagi and Gavutu-Tanambogo**, part of the Solomon Islands campaign.

On that day, in his first combat mission, Swett encountered a massive Japanese aerial attack on U.S. naval forces. Despite being vastly outnumbered, he engaged in fierce combat, shooting down **seven enemy aircraft in a single mission**, an unprecedented feat for a first-time combat pilot. Though wounded and with his aircraft damaged, Swett demonstrated unmatched bravery and determination.

Over the course of the war, James Swett flew the **F4F Wildcat and later the F4U Corsair**, achieving a total of **15.5 aerial victories**, solidifying his place among the elite **American Fighter Aces** of WWII. He continued to serve with distinction and later reached the rank of **Major** in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve.

Swett’s gallantry earned him the **Medal of Honor**, **Distinguished Flying Cross**, and numerous Air Medals. He remains one of the most legendary Marine aviators of the war.
