### **Biography of Colonel Herschel H. Green**
**Colonel Herschel H. “Herky” Green** (1920–2006) served with distinction in the **U.S. Army Air Forces** during World War II as a member of the **325th Fighter Group**, 15th Air Force, known as the **“Checkertail Clan.”** Flying both **P-40 Warhawks** and **P-51 Mustangs**, Green became the **leading ace of the 15th Air Force**, with **18 aerial victories** and **10 aircraft destroyed on the ground**, for a total of **28 confirmed victories**.
Born in Mayfield, Kentucky, Green displayed exceptional skill and leadership throughout his service. His most notable achievement occurred on **January 30, 1944**, when he **shot down six German aircraft in a single day**, earning him a place among the few elite aces who achieved “ace-in-a-day” status. He was revered for his combat precision, aggressive flying style, and unwavering courage.
Colonel Green was the recipient of numerous military honors, including the **Distinguished Service Cross**, **Silver Star**, **Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster**, **Air Medal with 25 Oak Leaf Clusters**, and **Croix de Guerre** from France.
