### **Biography of Commander Hamilton McWhorter III**

**Hamilton McWhorter III** (1921–2008) was a decorated American naval aviator and one of the top U.S. Navy aces of World War II. A Georgia native and graduate of the University of Georgia, McWhorter joined the U.S. Navy in 1941 and quickly proved himself a formidable combat pilot.

Assigned to **Fighting Squadron 9 (VF-9)** and later **VF-12**, McWhorter flew the legendary **Grumman F6F Hellcat** during critical campaigns in the Pacific Theater. He was the **first Navy ace to score all of his victories while flying the F6F Hellcat**, ultimately achieving **12 confirmed aerial victories**.

McWhorter's combat record includes action in the **Gilbert and Marshall Islands**, the **Philippines**, and the **Battle of the Philippine Sea**. For his extraordinary service and bravery in the air, he was awarded numerous commendations, including:
