Date: December 21, 1970

Place: The White House, Washington D.C.

Why: Elvis showed up unannounced at the White House with a letter requesting a meeting with Nixon. He wanted to offer his help in fighting the growing drug culture and unrest in the country.

What did Elvis want?

To be appointed as a "Federal Agent at Large" in the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs.

He believed his popularity and influence with young people could help combat drug use and promote patriotism.

He even brought Nixon a gift: a World War II-era Colt .45 pistol.

The meeting itself

Nixon was reportedly surprised but welcomed Elvis.

They discussed the drug problem and Elvis’ desire to work with the government.

Nixon gave Elvis a badge from the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs.

The famous photo of their handshake was taken during this meeting, and it became one of the most requested images from the National Archives.

Why is it iconic?

It’s such an unexpected meeting: a rock ‘n’ roll king with the President of the United States.

The photo captures a surreal moment of pop culture meeting politics.

The story has inspired movies and documentaries, like the 1997 film "Elvis Meets Nixon."
