### **Saburo Sakai – Imperial Japanese Navy Fighter Ace (1916–2000)**
Saburo Sakai served as a fighter pilot in the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II and is recognized as one of Japan’s **leading Aces**, officially credited with **64 aerial victories**. He flew the iconic **Mitsubishi A6M Zero**, and saw extensive combat in the Pacific Theater, including battles over China, the Philippines, Dutch East Indies, and Guadalcanal.
Sakai distinguished himself not only through his flying skill and tactical brilliance but also by his extraordinary resilience. On **August 7, 1942**, during a dogfight near Guadalcanal, he was severely wounded—blinded in one eye and partially paralyzed. Despite these injuries, he managed to fly his crippled Zero nearly 600 miles back to base, a feat regarded as one of the most incredible survival stories in aviation history.
He later returned to combat, continuing to fly missions until the end of the war. Following Japan's surrender, Sakai dedicated his post-war life to peace and reconciliation, becoming a respected figure internationally for his message of forgiveness and his personal transformation.
