Hubert Zemke was one of the most celebrated American fighter leaders of the Second World War. As commander of the 56th Fighter Group, nicknamed “Zemke’s Wolfpack,” he molded his unit into one of the most effective combat groups in the European Theater. Flying the P-47 Thunderbolt, Zemke and his men developed aggressive tactics that made the group famous for its deadly effectiveness against the Luftwaffe. Under his leadership, the 56th became the highest-scoring U.S. Army Air Forces fighter group in the European Theater, credited with more than 665 aerial victories.

Zemke himself achieved 17.75 confirmed aerial victories before being shot down and captured in 1944, spending the remainder of the war as a prisoner in Germany. His legacy as a tactician, ace, and inspirational leader continues to stand among the most distinguished in American air combat history.
