"Offered is a rare hand-signed cut signature of Brigadier General Chesley Gordon Peterson (1920–1990), executed in pencil. This autograph originates from a limited edition Gathering of Eagles lithograph and has been preserved as a stand-alone collectible. It is authenticated and encapsulated by PSA/DNA, providing both verification and protection for generations to come.
Chesley Peterson stands out as one of the most remarkable American pilots to serve with the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the Second World War. Leaving the United States before America’s official entry into the war, Peterson volunteered for the Eagle Squadrons, the legendary units of American pilots flying Spitfires and Hurricanes in defense of Britain. His leadership qualities quickly set him apart, and in 1942 he became the youngest group commander in RAF history when he assumed command of the 4th Fighter Group, which had been formed from the Eagle Squadrons after they transferred to the U.S. Army Air Forces.
Flying the Supermarine Spitfire and later the P-47 Thunderbolt, Peterson earned a reputation as a daring and skilled combat pilot. He achieved multiple aerial victories and led his group through some of the fiercest air battles over Europe. By the end of the war, he had risen to the rank of Brigadier General, one of the youngest ever in the U.S. Air Force, and was highly decorated with the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, and the Distinguished Flying Cross.
This signed cut, encapsulated and authenticated by PSA/DNA, is a significant piece of aviation history, linking collectors to the courage of the American volunteers who stood with Britain in its darkest hour and helped lay the foundation for American air power in Europe.
