Robert D. Knapp was a pioneering figure in American aviation, whose career spanned from the earliest days of flight through the modern era of air power. Knapp began his service as a World War I aviator, one of the young men who helped establish the foundation of American air combat in its infancy. He was among the early generation of U.S. Army Air Service pilots who flew fragile biplanes into combat and training missions, gaining hard-won experience that would shape the future of the Air Corps.

Following the First World War, Knapp continued to serve with distinction in the U.S. Army Air Corps, rising through the ranks during the interwar years as American aviation technology advanced. During World War II, he commanded bomber units and later the XII Fighter Command in the Mediterranean Theater, directing operations that supported Allied ground campaigns in North Africa and Italy.
