Gerald W. Johnson was a leading U.S. Army Air Forces ace of the 56th Fighter Group, the famed “Zemke’s Wolfpack,” during World War II. Flying the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt in the European Theater, Johnson quickly distinguished himself in aerial combat. By the time his tour concluded, he had been credited with 16.5 confirmed aerial victories, making him one of the group’s top-scoring pilots.

Johnson’s skill and leadership earned him command responsibilities, and he later rose to the rank of Major General in the postwar U.S. Air Force. Among his many decorations were the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Air Medal, recognizing his valor and effectiveness in combat. His career embodied both the daring of a World War II ace and the dedication of a lifelong officer.
