George Mendonsa was a U.S. Navy sailor during World War II, best remembered as the man widely identified as the “kissing sailor” in the iconic V-J Day photograph taken in New York’s Times Square on August 14, 1945, by photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt. The image captured the spontaneous celebration at the announcement of Japan’s surrender, marking the end of World War II.
Mendonsa served aboard the destroyer USS The Sullivans (DD-537), where he took part in combat operations in the Pacific Theater. His service included dangerous duties in support of carrier operations and defense against Japanese attacks, a reminder of the vital role played by American destroyers in the Pacific war effort.
Though his fame came unexpectedly through one of the most recognizable photographs of the 20th century, Mendonsa’s life story represents both the courage of the sailors who fought in the Pacific and the jubilation felt worldwide at the war’s end.
This limited-edition signed bookplate, authenticated and accompanied by PSA/DNA’s Certificate of Authenticity, offers collectors a rare piece connected to both a Navy veteran and a cultural icon of victory and celebration.
