Hub Zemke was one of the most accomplished and respected American fighter leaders of World War II, best known as the commanding officer of the famed 56th Fighter Group, nicknamed “Zemke’s Wolf Pack.” Under his leadership, the unit became the highest-scoring American fighter group in the European Theater, flying the rugged P-47 Thunderbolt and achieving more than 665 confirmed aerial victories.

Zemke’s tactical innovations and emphasis on teamwork made him one of the architects of modern air combat strategy. He personally achieved 17.75 aerial victories, earning the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, and numerous other decorations. Captured after bailing out over Germany in 1944, Zemke continued to display extraordinary leadership as a senior Allied officer at Stalag Luft I, where he worked to maintain discipline and morale among thousands of captured airmen.
