The Battle of the Bulge, fought from December 16, 1944, to January 25, 1945, was the last major German offensive of World War II and one of the largest battles ever fought by the United States Army. The signatures on this photograph represent men who served courageously during that brutal winter campaign that marked the turning point of the war in Western Europe.

Walter Stitt (1922–2016) served with the 740th Tank Battalion, which played a vital role in the relief of Bastogne and armored operations through Belgium and Germany. Known for his bravery under fire, Stitt was among the soldiers who fought through the Ardennes under freezing conditions and constant enemy assault.

Bradford Freeman (1924–2022) was a paratrooper with Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, famously depicted in Band of Brothers. Freeman parachuted into Normandy on D-Day, fought through Operation Market Garden, and endured the siege of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. His steady courage and humility made him one of the most beloved members of the “Band of Brothers.”

Jim “Pee Wee” Martin (1921–2022) also served with Easy Company, 506th PIR, 101st Airborne Division, earning his nickname for his small stature but outsized bravery. He parachuted into Normandy on D-Day, jumped into Holland during Market Garden, and fought in Bastogne. Martin’s service spanned nearly every major airborne engagement in Europe, and his firsthand accounts have become invaluable to historians and future generations.

George Mertz was a combat veteran of the Battle of the Bulge, serving with distinction in ground operations that pushed back the German offensive and helped restore Allied control of the Ardennes. His service reflects the grit and perseverance of the soldiers who endured one of the harshest campaigns of the war.

This panoramic photograph, featuring the authentic signatures and personal inscriptions of these remarkable men, serves as a living tribute to the heroes of the Battle of the Bulge—a moment of unity, endurance, and sacrifice that defined the Allied victory in Europe.
