Lee Harvey Oswald (1939–1963) was an American former Marine best known as the alleged assassin of President John F. Kennedy. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Oswald had a troubled childhood and developed an early interest in Marxism. After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, he defected to the Soviet Union in 1959, expressing disillusionment with American capitalism. He later returned to the United States with his Russian wife, Marina. On November 22, 1963, Kennedy was shot and killed while riding in a motorcade in Dallas, Texas. Oswald was arrested shortly after the assassination for the murder of a Dallas police officer and later charged with killing the president. He denied all accusations, claiming he was a “patsy.” Two days later, nightclub owner Jack Ruby fatally shot Oswald on live television.
