James J. Corbett, known as “Gentleman Jim,” was born in San Francisco in 1866 and became one of the most important figures in boxing history. Unlike many fighters of his era, Corbett was educated and worked as a bank clerk before turning professional. He became famous for his scientific boxing style—using footwork, defense, timing, and strategy rather than sheer strength. His approach helped transform boxing from the brutal bare-knuckle contests of the 19th century into a more modern, gloved sport fought under the Marquess of Queensberry Rules. Corbett’s intelligence and technical skill earned him widespread popularity and the nickname “Gentleman Jim.”

His defining moment came on September 7, 1892, when he fought reigning heavyweight champion John L. Sullivan in New Orleans. Sullivan, known for his power and dominance, represented the old guard of bare-knuckle fighting. Corbett, however, used speed and movement to wear him down and knocked him out in the 21st round, becoming the first heavyweight champion of the modern gloved era. He later lost the title to Bob Fitzsimmons in 1897 but remained a major figure in boxing. After retiring, Corbett pursued acting and wrote his autobiography, leaving a legacy as the man who helped usher boxing into its modern age.
